The Essentials We Believe

1. About God

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

Genesis 1:1, 26-27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14

2. About Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

Matthew 1:22, 23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14,15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:1

3. About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for godly living, power (spiritual gifts) for serving, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved. As Christians, we seek to live under His control daily.

2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16, 12:4-7; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18

4. About Human Beings

People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in nature and character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by disobedience toward God called “sin”. Sin separates people from God for time and eternity, and causes many problems in life.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2

5. About Salvation

Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

6. About Sanctification

It is God’s will that each of us should be filled with the Holy Spirit and completely sanctified—set apart by God, separated from sin and worldliness, and fully dedicated to the will of God. Sanctification is both a crisis and a progressive experience. It does not mean that we will experience sinless perfection (in the sense of being free from mistakes and weaknesses). It means a purity of heart and life—a life characterized by love of God and others and growth in conforming to the image of Jesus.

John 14:15-23; Romans 8:29; Romans 12:1-2; Philippians 1:9-11; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24; Hebrews 12:1-2

7. About Eternity

People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness, salvation, and sanctification. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

John 3:16; John 14:17; Romans 6:23; Romans 8:17-18; Revelation 20:15; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9

8. About Membership

The membership of this Church shall be composed of individuals who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and offer evidence, by their confession and their conduct, that they are living in accord with their affirmations and the church Bylaws, and are actively pursuing and continuing in a vital fellowship with the Lord, Jesus Christ.

9. About Baptism

It is encouraged that those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior participate in a water baptism. Water baptism is an external testimony of something that already took place in the heart of the believer the moment he/she was saved. Water baptism is the Christian identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Water baptism is a picture of spiritual baptism as defined in Romans and 1 Corinthians. It is the outward testimony of the believer’s inward faith. A sinner is saved the moment he places his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Baptism is a visible testimony to that faith.

1 Peter 3:21; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 12:13

10. About Marriage

We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning and that is marriage sanctioned by God which joins one man by birth and one woman by birth in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other.  We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

We consider all marriage ceremonies to be worship services. Due to our biblical conviction and denominational precepts, a pastor (or any other qualified official or organizational representative) will not be permitted to perform a transgender or same-sex “marriage” on the property or within facilities under our or Pillar Ministries control.

We believe that any form of sexual immorality, as stated in the Bible, is sinful and offensive to God.

We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of the church as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the church members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the church in a capacity, or who serve as volunteers in a ministry capacity, should abide by and agree to this Statement on Marriage and Sexuality and conduct themselves accordingly.

We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with scripture nor the doctrines of the church.
